U.S. MNT Unveils New Nike Uniforms In 4-0 Win Over Guatemala
February 19, 2006
Beaverton, Ore. (19 February, 2006) – The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team sported their new Nike jerseys for the first time in today’s 4-0 win over Guatemala at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas. Celebrating the launch of the new team uniforms, an 80-foot U.S. jersey was unveiled across the stadium during pre-game and the players revealed the new design as they took the field.
Last week, top athletes from all eight Nike-sponsored World Cup federations unveiled their new uniforms in Berlin, Germany at the Olympic Stadium. Nike sponsored teams include title holder Brazil, as well as Australia, Croatia, Holland, Korea, Mexico, Portugal and the United States.
The new uniforms have been completely redesigned and the new U.S. uniforms are inspired by the jersey of the 1950 tournament game (where the U.S. defeated England in a huge upset by global soccer standards. These cues come in the form of bold stripes and a large federation logo. Both are seen on the home and away kits. The garments use the innovative Nike Sphere Dry apparel technology to keep players cool on the pitch. Nike worked with each federation on the development and design of the uniforms including unique numbers, colors, collars and detailing inspired by that country’s soccer heritage.
Nike Sphere Dry is just one example of product innovation across Nike’s footwear, apparel and equipment product lines for soccer. Other key product innovation is reflected in the fastest boot, Nike’s Mercurial Vapor III, and the Tiempo and Total 90 boots, as well as the Mercurial and Aerow Total 90 balls.
