THOUSANDS OF WOMEN OWNED THE NIGHT IN LONDON’S VICTORIA PARK

10,000 women lit up the night in London’s Victoria Park for the Nike We Own The Night 10K; a fusion of sport, style and music.

Held in East London, the heartland of emerging street style and culture, the race combined top DJs, energizing light shows and inspirational race experiences to create an evening run with a difference. The celebratory after-party ensured the adrenaline of race day continued across the finish line and into the night.

An event village added a festival experience with tents hosted by Nike+ and ELLE UK to make sure runners looked stylish and race ready. The Fox Problem and DJ Martelo kicked off the evening before Nike and Equinox Master Trainers led an energetic pre-race warm-up to get women geared-up ‘to own the night.'

Participants shared the starting line with British fashion designer Holly Fulton, ELLE Editor-in-Chief Lorraine Candy and marathon world record-holder Paula Radcliffe. British fashion designer Henry Holland joined iconic London jewelry designer Alex Monroe to be Nike’s honorary male runners. Top British female athletes Perri Shakes-Drayton and Katarina Johnson-Thompson fired the starting gun, which saw runners start their 10k journey along an illuminated race route like no other.

Paula Radcliffe commented: ‘The atmosphere was fantastic, there was so much positivity with all the women encouraging each other every step of the way. To see so many thousands of young women pushing themselves after weeks of training is something to be truly celebrated!”

Lorraine Candy added: ‘Well that was just amazing, a 10k has never felt so short! Running alongside Paula Radcliffe, Holly Fulton and the thousands of ELLE readers really spurs you on. Everyone was in it together and we definitely owned the night!’

A spectacular light forest and two unique light tunnels illuminated the course, while DJ Clara Ampho, steel and jazz bands performed live along the route, keeping the adrenaline pumping and the legs moving.

Having crossed the finish line, runners received a bespoke Alex Monroe finisher necklace in an exclusive Liberty print box handed to them by top Nike athletes Perri Shakes-Drayton and Katarina Johnson Thompson - a signal that the night had been owned and the celebrations could start with a well-deserved glass of bubbly. BBC Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw led the after-party on the main stage in the event village.

This year, WOTN runners will make their runs go further.  Nike will donate £4 from each We Own the Night entry to Women Win in support of programs that help get young people more active in each WOTN city. Runners can unlock even more funds for the girls in their cities by reaching their respective distance goals using Nike+ and sharing them on Facebook and Twitter. The support is made as part of Nike's commitment to the global Designed to Move initiative. Nike spear-headed Designed to Move: a call-to-action supported by public, private, and civil sector organisations dedicated to ending the epidemic of physical inactivity.
