A Swimming Lesson Shows the Power of Our Playing Fields to Set Us Free

The You Can’t Stop Us series from Nike celebrates the return to our sport sanctuaries after an unprecedented season of limitations. This new installment highlights the freedom of another playing field — the water — and the women who find refuge in it, from the unrivaled expanse of the ocean to the narrow dare of a swimming lane.

The film uses the metaphor of a mother’s swimming lesson to celebrate female athletes whose fearless spirit to overcome matches the untamable liberty of life in the water. Along the way, the film features three remarkable Middle Eastern women who have forged their own success in sport: amputee Zainab Al-Eqabi, UAE national rower Maha Al Ameri and triathlete Manal Rostom.

“When I am in the water, I feel a sense of freedom and boundlessness,” says Zainab Al-Eqabi, who picked up swimming in 2011 after experiencing severe back pain from her prosthetic gait. “Swimming has taught me that if I want to achieve or learn something, nothing can stop me. Don’t let your mindset stand in the way of your goals and aspirations.”

The Nike Victory Swim collection, guided by inclusivity in bringing performance innovation to modest swimwear, appears throughout the film.
