Nike Pays Homage to Atlético de Madrid’s Historic Double-Winning Campaign with 2015-16 Home Kit
June 24, 2015
New Atlético de Madrid home kit fuses club history and achievement with modern performance innovation.
2015-16 marks the 20th anniversary of Atlético de Madrid’s 1995-96 campaign, in which the club claimed El Doblete, the prized double of the La Liga and Copa Del Rey titles, for the first time in its history.
The heart of the legendary 1995-96 team’s midfield 20 years ago, Diego Simeone remains a club icon and, now as manager, its undisputed leader.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the club’s glorious double-winning season, the 2015-16 Atlético de Madrid home kit features design insights drawn from the kits in which Simeone and his teammates made history.
The new home shirt boasts five classic Atlético de Madrid red stripes on a white background. Recreating the home kit aesthetic from 20 years ago, every stripe is bordered by a thin red pinstripe on each side.
In further a reference to the 1995-96 shirt, the sleeves and shoulder blades of the new home shirt form a commanding block of the club’s vibrant red. This color palate continues onto the shirt’s back, which for the first time in Atlético de Madrid’s history is entirely red.
Blue stripes also run down each of the shirt’s flanks, connecting with the tonal blue stripes that feature on the classic Atlético de Madrid blue shorts.
The shirt has a lightweight and modern V-neck collar with a blue band at the back. On the inside back of the neck sits a small Spanish flag featuring the anniversary dates of ‘1995/96’ and ‘2015/16’
The new home socks are entirely red with a wide stripe of tonal chevrons on the back of the calf.
The new Atlético de Madrid home kit is available in stores and at nike.com starting June 25. The official Atlético de Madrid Store at Vicente Calderon will also be open from 00.01 on June 25, offering fans a first opportunity to purchase the kit.
While this new kit represents a proud symbol of the club, it offers players the very latest in Nike performance innovation, fabric technology, moisture management and environmental sustainability.
NIKE DRI-FIT TECHNOLOGY
Nike Dri-FIT technology draws sweat away from the body to the exterior of the shirts and shorts where it quickly evaporates. This allows players to perform at their best by remaining cooler, drier and more comfortable.
The laser-cut ventilation holes and mesh panels in key areas of the kit are designed to improve performance by increasing air circulation to the players’ bodies and helping regulate their temperatures.
The jersey is crafted using a full mesh fabric – this makes up the full front and back panel of the shirt, increasing airflow and facilitating enhanced movement.
Nike places sustainable innovation at the heart of its kits through the use of recycled polyester, delivering unrivalled performance and lower environmental impact.
Each piece of the kit – the shirt, shorts and socks – is constructed with recycled polyester, which is made from recycled plastic bottles that are melted down to produce fine yarn used to create the fabric. Each kit is made using an average of 18 recycled plastic bottles. Since 2010, Nike has diverted more than 2 billion plastic bottles from landfills into recycled polyester – enough to cover about 3,500 football pitches.
By using recycled polyester, Nike is also reducing the energy consumed in the manufacturing process by up to 30 percent compared to virgin polyester. For more information, visit nikebetterworld.com.
