Nike and Google Create Global Online Community For Football
March 20, 2006
Beaverton, OR (20 March, 2006) – Nike and Google today announce the launch of Joga.com, giving people who share a passion for the joy and beauty of football the chance to create a global online community for the world’s most popular sport. Available in 14 languages, joga.com (joga means “play” in Portuguese) enables users to create their own profiles, pick their favorite players, see profiles of players such as Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney, choose teams and pitches, post their own photos and videos, and form global social networks with others to share, debate and celebrate the heart and soul of football.
“Nike and Google have given people everywhere the chance to create their own global community dedicated to their shared passion for football,” said Trevor Edwards, Nike’s vice president of global brand management. “We created the destination and tools. Now it’s up to people who love the beautiful game to log on, sign up and build a community that celebrates brilliant football and the joy of playing the world’s most popular sport.”
Nike launched its “Joga Bonito” global football initiative in February to promote beautiful play and brilliant football. Other elements of Joga Bonito include JogaTV, joga3 futsal grassroots tournaments, Nike football performance footwear, apparel and equipment, and sport culture product and digital content celebrating the heritage of the game. All can be found on nikefootball.com. Through Joga.com, participants also can connect to Nike’s joga events and be a part of the Joga Bonito experience.
“Joga.com will be the only site that brings unique sports content to users through Google's technology,” said David Jeske, Engineering Director at Google. “On Joga.com, users can connect with each other, upload photos and videos and share information about football with fellow fans from all over the world.”
Joga.com is available in English, French, Spanish, traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Dutch, German, Korean, Italian, Russian, Czech and Thai. Joga.com users can build their own online communities by creating individual profiles and connecting with others through easy-to-navigate pages. Users also will have access to promotional information specific to their country, as well as the latest news on national and local teams, and information on Nike’s joga3 tournaments. An estimated 3 million players in 40 countries are expected to participate in grassroots Joga3 tournaments, which got under way in early February.
In the coming months, Nike and Google will be introducing more tools and features to help Joga members embrace their love of football and build a global community. Joga.com, currently accessible by invitation only, will be open soon to all football lovers. For more information, visit Joga.com.
