Major Gift Given to City Parks to Improve Tennis Facilities
November 29, 2007
BEAVERTON, OR – (29 November 2007) Nike announced today a major donation to Portland Parks & Recreation in honor of the historic Davis Cup Finals being held in the city November 30 to December 2. The $50,000 gift, announced during a tennis clinic for area youth at the Portland Tennis Center, will be used by the city to rehabilitate tennis courts at the Portland Tennis Center.
“Nike is committed locally and globally to giving youth the opportunity to play through our Let Me Play initiative,” said Nike Chief Legal Counsel Jim Carter. “Tennis is a great individual and team sport, accessible to young people of all abilities. We believe this gift will help Portland Parks & Recreation expand access to tennis for youth throughout the city.”
Nike is one of three local presenting sponsors for the Davis Cup Finals in Portland and played an active role in recruiting this major event to the city. Nike also made more than $2 million in contributions to city recreational facilities as part of the company’s 30th anniversary in 2002.
“Nike is a great partner in promoting our city and region to the world,” said Portland Mayor Tom Potter, who accepted the gift on behalf of the city. “They are also a great partner in giving kids in our city opportunities to play, compete and be active. This donation is another great moment in that long and successful partnership.”
Portland Parks & Recreation officials said the money would specifically be used to do capital improvements to the courts at the Portland Tennis Center and that those improvements would likely be completed in 2008.
