Converse, Deviation and Patta Celebrate the Evolution of Club Culture
December 18, 2017
In Europe, two brands have helped define street style and club culture as we know it. Amsterdam-based Patta built a foundation on bringing the latest sneakers to its local community, growing into a globally recognized player in the street style landscape as well as a cultural destination. Meanwhile, in East London, Benji B’s Deviation, one of the city’s most successful club nights, has evolved in the last decade from an underground party into a full-fledged label.
With Converse, Patta and Deviation join to celebrate the respective cultures they serve and the evolution of their respective brands. The three-piece collaboration takes a hyperbolic approach to the contrasts of counterculture. The collection is unexpected in texture and hue, while functional in its wear.
“I think our strength lies in the way both brands evolved and on what we’ve achieved over time. Consistency is something I highly regard, and I am absolutely inspired by the way these guys have built and kept their club night relevant through the years,” says Patta founder, Gee Schmidt. “Converse has always been a loyal partner for us; they’ve been open and supportive of our vision always — and of course have a natural connection with music. This collection is a reflection of these three entities coming together, highlighting Benji’s and Jude’s tailoring taste, sprinkling it with some Patta flavor, with Converse as the enabler of it all!”
Casentino wool, a mainstay in fashion after its humble beginnings in the Italian countryside, is the collection’s core material. The selection of orange wool, to contrast the collection’s darker hues, is a pure Patta reference — it's the official color of the Dutch Royal Family. Added fun fact: Audrey Hepburn brought Casentino into fashion world conversation after famously sporting a bold orange coat of her own.
“We have watched this evolution over the 10 years; babies have been born from people meeting at Deviation night, artists that you only used to see in the crowd are now superstars. Our music taste has evolved too, and when we look back at pictures of ourselves over the last decade, it's safe to say that our style has also matured,” says Deviation co-founder Benji B.
That maturity is reflected in the design of the Converse x Patta x Deviation collection. Conceived to form a single head-to-toe look, and highlighted by a full-zip Converse Essentials hoodie, it balances heritage in streetwear with sartorially flare. In addition to apparel, the collection also features two classic Converse footwear styles: the Chuck 70 and the One Star. Each silhouette has a unique high/low application of Casentino wool — duly considered and easily matching up with the overall aesthetic.
In the end, its not unlike how Patta and Deviation view the build of their own worlds. Judah, Benji B’s partner, notes, “With Deviation, every element is considered: from the person doing the door, to the smell of incense burning, the use of red lighting and most importantly the sound and people. You can’t fake or buy that experience.”
You can, however, buy the Converse x Patta x Deviation collection. It releases December 21 on converse.com and at select retailers.
