A scintillating display of putting helped Nike Golf athlete Charl Schwartzel record an eight-stroke victory at the Tshwane Open. The win is his second win on The European Tour this season.
Playing with the new Nike Method Prototype putter, Schwartzel rolled in 16 birdies in total over the four days, including two monster efforts on the 14th and 16th holes on Sunday. He also canned three eagles during the week to give him a winning total of 16-under-par in his native South Africa. Schwartzel ended the week atop the driving distance (325.9 yards) chart and Greens-in-Regulation (79.2%) leaderboard too.
In addition to the putter, Schwartzel relied on a full bag of Nike equipment at Pretoria CC including the new Nike Vapor Fly Pro driver and RZN Tour/Platinum golf ball, the same driver-ball combination used by four-time Major champion Rory McIlroy and a number of other Nike athletes. The 2011 Masters champion also wore the Nike Lunar Control 4 footwear.
“I feel the consistency is definitely returning to my long game, and my putting was a huge factor in the victory this week,” said the 31-year-old, who now has 11 European Tour titles to his name, eight of which have come in South Africa.
In his last four outings on The European Tour, Schwartzel has finished in the top-10 on each occasion, winning twice in the process.
