SHAPES is Converse’s First Genderless Apparel Collection

Converse SHAPES 1

Each individual is wearing the Converse SHAPES Bubble Crew and Triangle Front Chino in one of four sizes based on their style preference.

What if apparel was built agnostic of gender? What if its goal was to accommodate our innumerable body shapes?

These were the questions that predicated Converse’s latest, genderless apparel collection, SHAPES.

The company, committed to intelligent design, reimagines the Chuck Taylor’s position as an inclusive and unisex shoe through apparel, reflecting the needs of consumers today.

As the first of three collections to debut in 2020, Converse SHAPES is a new type of apparel essential. The collection is not designed for gender, but instead for body shape, created from the belief that size is a reference point, not an identity.

“When starting design from a non-traditional place, there are endless opportunities to reimagine everything from construction to sizing to materials,” says Jonathan Tappan, VP, Global Apparel at Converse. “SHAPES is the perfect example of how to meet the consumer in their element. By bringing functionality, inclusivity and comfort to everyday clothes, we believe we can really change the game.”

Made from 50 percent recycled cotton and 50 percent virgin cotton, SHAPES features a set of five core pieces, offered in only four sizes globally (traditionally, there are 14 common sizes across men and women’s lines).

Converse will also launch Utility Fleece and Court Ready, collections geared toward the Skate and Basketball communities. Along with SHAPES, Utility Fleece and Court Ready look to enable individual expression through silhouettes that fuel movement.

SHAPES will launch in summer 2020, followed by Utility Fleece in fall and Court Ready in early 2021.

This Summer, Jordan Brand Invites Everyone to the Courts with Two New Collections

Basketball unites players in all kinds of court settings. Whether under the lights of a gymnasium or on an asphalt street, players can find a personal and collective solace in the game. It’s in the spirit of basketball’s diverse backdrops, inviting all levels to play, that Jordan Brand releases footwear and apparel timed to two key Parisian hoops moments.

Recognizing the electric diversity of France’s basketball talent is the summertime Jordan x Quai 54 collection. The product spans footwear and apparel, covering performance and lifestyle, and features the tournament logo’s stylized geometric designs on silhouettes like the Air Jordan XXXV Low, the Air Jordan I Low and the Air Jordan V mid.

“This year, we created a ‘Quai 54’ graphic motif inspired by traditional West African fabric patterns,” says Thibaut de Longeville, co-founder of Quai 54. “We wanted to modernize the look, add some Parisian flair, and ultimately match the energy of the event and its incredible community.”

At the highest level, Jordan Brand unveils a new jersey for the French men and women’s national team. A sportswear collection accompanies the jersey’s release. The pieces include hoodies, T-shirts, jackets and shorts. The apparel designs draft from the uniform, which features a new pattern inspired by the colors of the national flag, incorporating the Jumpman logo on the chest.

“Playing for our country under the legacy of Jordan Brand is special,” says Marine Johannès, guard for the French Women's National Team. “We can't wait to wear the new jersey and let the colors of France shine.”

The Jordan x Quai 54 collection releases July 8 at the Paris House of Innovation and July 10 on The French jersey and apparel collection releases July 3 on

Latest Jordan Brand Apparel Amplify Functionality and Soul

In January, Jordan Brand debuted a new function-first women’s apparel capsule. Though aesthetic cues stemmed from classic ’80s basketball design language, the silhouettes established a new vision for wardrobe standards tailored explicitly for today.

With that grounding, Jordan Brand continues to elevate utility-driven staples in its upcoming fall apparel collections: Jordan 23 Engineered, Women’s City Utility Collection, Women’s NYC Collection and Women’s Flight Essentials Collection.

Emphasis throughout the new collections is on creating a suite of versatile garments.

“Throughout its history, Jordan Brand has delivered the unexpected through a balance of performance and romance,” says Martin Lotti, Jordan Brand VP of Design. “These new collections offer utilitarian performance infused with a basketball soul, and created through a refined articulation of classic basketball design lines.”

The Jordan City Utility Collection cements the Flight Suit and Utility Pant as icons of feminine functionality. Both highlight the tailored approach Jordan Brand brings to articulating utilitarian garments, with lightweight fabrics and easy adjustability allowing body-confident individual styling. These hallmark pieces are complemented by the Jordan Utility Off-Shoulder Jacket, Jordan Utility Bike Shorts (including a zippered back pocket for keys and cards) and fleece offerings formed with elegant proportions.

“We strive to design functional, wearable statements that evoke a cool confidence,” Lotti says.

Fit, flow and volume are similarly spotlighted in the Women’s Flight Essentials Collection. Comprised of fundamental garments, such as crew necks, tights, sports bras, tracksuits and T-Shirts, the collection translates ’80s Jordan silhouettes though a contemporary women’s lens.

Jordan 23 Engineered focuses on innovative technical details, materials and translucent Air-inspired trims, as well as garment-dye color innovation, to push a classic Jordan design language to new territory. Devised as a gender-neutral assortment, Jordan 23 Engineered garments are intended to naturally transition from athletic activity to laid-back leisure.

The latest Jordan 23 Engineered collection is available now on The Jordan Women’s City Utility Collection will be available July 24 and the Jordan Women’s Flight Essentials collection will be available on August 20.

Four Keys to Nike’s Revival Apparel Designed with Sustainable Materials

Debuted in February 2020, the Nike Revival collection extends NIKE, Inc.’s Move to Zero, a journey toward a zero carbon and zero waste future, and related circular design principles to apparel design.

The majority of the styles present a gender-neutral take on classic silhouettes, including a full-zip hoodie, crew, T-shirt, joggers and shorts. These are complemented by a women's dress. All garments are conceived with a blend of at least 75 percent recycled and organic fibers.

This reduce-and-reuse effort is punctuated by four key elements of the capsule's design:

1. Pattern efficiency. All garments in the collection meet a 90 percent or better marker for efficiency. This means less waste on the cutting floor, and due to the nature of working with squares and triangles, the process forms a subtle, yet dynamic new aesthetic.

2. Fleece from recycled materials. This fabric features a pre-industrial waste yarn, made from previous seasons' shredded scraps, and carries a flecked, multi-color look to the back of the fabric.

3. Undyed color. The grayish hue of the Revival collection is undyed, meaning there's a reduction in water use from traditional dyed fleece offerings. Unfinished hems on some garments allow easy roll up — great for individualizing fit and revealing the flecking of the fleece.

4. Graphics. Nike Grind and fleece are used for the graphics.

’70s Nike Graphics and Cutting-Edge Tech Mix for Nike Gyakusou

Nike Gyakusou Spring 2020 24

The latest unisex Nike Gyakusou capsule follows Jun Takahashi's desire to deliver distinct performance running apparel designed for the modern runner.

It features two t-shirt options complete with reinterpreted 70s-era Nike graphics (one calling out famed Tokyo running spot, Yoyogi Park), two shorts options and a track suit. The latter employs a new class of breathable, engineered Nike Therma-FIT technology to provide zoned warmth and air flow to help keep runners at their optimal temperature.

The Nike Gyakusou Spring 2020 collection launches globally March 12.

Nike ISPA Inflate Jacket 16

The "I" in ISPA commands designers to improvise. Explicitly, the principles of the program remind "never be blocked by the first answer to a problem, IMPROVISE to see if the solution can be improved." That element of the ethos is visible through ISPA product to varying degrees, and in ISPA's early stages is best connected to the spirit of Nike's iterative advances in the Nike ISPA Inflate Jacket.

With an internal blue bladder serving as its signature element, the jacket proposes a manual loft solution for the spring season. It’s a period of the year where, from dawn to dusk, a variance of five degrees might feel pretty different. How can one garment provide adequate adaptive comfort?

With the ISPA Inflate Jacket, the proposed solution follows a historical antecedent: the 2006 Nike Airvantage, a stylish apparel proposition that provided an intricate arrangement of air channels built into its silhouette.

Here there is no 1:1 adaption of an innovation, instead the design riffs on an idea and finds a new form for it. What's realized is the introduction of a bold new silhouette.

The Nike ISPA Inflate Jacket launches globally March 13.

A new, unlined Nike Sportswear Windrunner jacket features 100 percent recycled polyester plain weave fabrication. The drawcords and zippers made from Nike Grind — a palette of premium materials (rubber, foam, fiber, leather and textile blends) recovered in the footwear manufacturing and recycling process — accentuate the collection’s statement as a roadmap toward a zero carbon and zero waste future.

The Nike Sportswear full-zip hoodie, crew, T-shirt, joggers and shorts are men’s wardrobe staples redesigned with sustainability top of mind. 2020 Medal Stand 1
2020 Medal Stand 0

The Team USA collection elevates sustainability when this summer’s lights will shine brightest: the medal ceremony. Inspired by the recycled materials that make up the medals, Nike designers reimagined the iconic Windrunner jacket with 100 percent recycled polyester. Its distinct chevron-shaped silhouette, engineered to size for both male and female athletes, is inspired by Japanese kimono design and the panels are knit to shape for minimal waste. The garment’s defining mark — the national team logo — is stamped with recycled Nike Grind rubber. Team USA pants are also constructed from 100 percent recycled nylon, with a 100 percent recycled polyester mesh lining. Additional elements, such as the drawcord tips, zipper pulls and Swoosh branding, are made with Nike Grind.

This summer’s medalists will wear some of Nike’s lowest-impact footwear atop the podium. The Vapormax, a Nike Air icon, is made using 75 percent recycled manufacturing waste. Its recycled-polyester Flyknit upper is precision-engineered for minimal waste. Additional features include FlyEase technology, enabling easy entry and adjustability for athletes of all abilities on the medal stand. Each color and material was inspired by a view of piles of waste from a distance, mixing different textures, colors and shapes together to form the new Nike Air Vapormax 2020.

Two Basketball Staples Get an Update With the City Exploration Collection

Nike City Exploration Collection 2020 Official Images and Release Date 1

Nike Basketball's rising popularity in the late ’80s led the brand to create a memorable dualistic identity: one invented around strength and power, the other around speed and flight. The latter was the origin for the Flight Jacket, which helped reflect a new sense of on- and off-court style throughout the next decade. The City Exploration Collection takes this staple of Nike Basketball culture and applies it through a city-perspective, specifically Chicago and Atlanta.

The aforementioned jacket uses colors inspired by the Chicago Flag. Another addition to the collection, also updated and articulated through a city lens, is the basketball short, made with lightweight knit fabric and bold trims. Zippered pockets make storing small items easy. Rounding out the collection are a range of tees, hoodies, hats and bags.

The Clothing for Tennis' First 2020 Major is Designed to Keep Players Cool

NikeCourt Melbourne Collection 2020 8

The patterns throughout the men and women's apparel were created by Australian-raised artist Cassie Byrnes, who finds inspiration through the tropical beauty of North Queensland, translating it onto watercolor paper through pigment inks and gouache. "I start with a considered palette and story," she says. "Then I play with mark-making, texture and composition to capture the essence and spirit of the theme."

The year’s opening slam in Melbourne boasts a raucous atmosphere, drawing an annual attendance of more than 700,000. Melbourne also tracks the hottest temperatures of any of tennis’ four majors. To account for the temperatures during play, NikeCourt designers developed a knee-length bodysuit for women as a baselayer. This garment is informed by Atlas body-mapping to identify the areas that tend to overheat (notably under the bra and at the neckline) and is pieced together to maximize breathability in those spaces.

A base garment serves a double purpose: Many players want to combine the cooler outfit with unique ways to present themselves on court. Athletes across the draw can select tanks, crop tops and skirts — all featuring patterns from Australian artist Cassie Byrnes — to accent their respective looks. For example, while Bianca Andreescu might choose to wear just the bodysuit, Madison Keys may layer atop a tennis skirt. The combinations between the bodysuit, the patterns and the supporting garments run a spectrum of player preferences.

The men’s apparel sublimates Byrnes’ whimsical graphics directly onto the fabrics in spots that encourage stylistic improvisation. An example is in the men’s polo, revealing the cloud pastel pattern under the collar. Other examples are more obvious, such as in the all-over pattern of the men's warm-up jacket.

The NikeCourt Melbourne collection releases globally January 13.

“The Earth and heart logo on the apparel line is inspired by everyone being able to come together around their love for the game of basketball,” says Westbrook. “It's special to know what the game of basketball has done for my life, and the collection is a symbol of what the game can mean for the rest of the world.”

Based off of Phil Knight’s creation of the Nike Pro Club on March 21, 1975, as a way to venture the newly-formed company beyond the track and onto the basketball court, Nike Sportswear presents the Pro Club sweater.

The Nike Pro Club “team” was fashioned from 10 original members as a way to aid the company in its continued development and improvement of basketball product. Participation in the club meant that professional players were given exclusive apparel.

The sweater evokes the company’s early connection to the sport of basketball by paying homage to the Pro Club throughout. Complete with a chain-stitched “Phil” for the company’s co-founder, the sweater is inspired by product worn by the original club members. The numbers “7” and “5” are featured on either sleeve to commemorate the year in which the Pro Club was founded. The design on the back of the sweater pays tribute to one of the original players in the club, complete with a Swoosh knit into the shoes.

Russell Westbrook and Jordan Brand are collaborating with Opening Ceremony to release the latter's first athlete-design project.

“I’ve always loved fashion and the creative process when it comes to designing. The apparel pieces — including an overcoat, a pant-trouser hybrid, a color-blocked track jacket and more — modify classic Air Jordan looks with new proportions and details based on the point guard's irreverent personal style.

"When Russ and I sat down together to design, it started a creative dialogue and synergy of true collaboration," says Opening Ceremony co-founder and creative director Humberto Leon.
