Several thousand runners descended upon Sydney for Nike Australia’s inaugural women-only night race.

On Thursday, 3 May 2012, Nike Australia made history, hosting the country’s first ever female night race. More than 3,200 women descended on the iconic and picturesque grounds of Centennial Park in Sydney for the 13km race. The inaugural event forms part of the Nike Women’s Race Series taking place in 15 cities around the world, involving more than 50,000 women.

Among the runners were well known local personalities Ruby Rose (DJ/TV Presenter), Erika Heynatz (Model) and Olympic 5000m Athlete – Sonia O’Sullivan. The event was hosted by local TV presenter and host of The Voice Australia, Darren McMullen.

Runners enjoyed a pre-race Nike Training Club warm up with Nike master trainer, Marie Purvis to live music from DJ Anna Lunoe.

The motivational elements throughout the course were inspired by the words from each participant for “why they run the night”. Their answers were projected throughout the park and accompanied by live DJ stations and fireworks.

Post-event, runners celebrated at an after party complete with live music, massages, giveaways, refreshments, Nike Free Run+ 3 trials, Nike+ demos and a photo booth to share their success via Facebook. Participates posted their best shots to Instagram and Tweeted throughout the night, helping #NikeSheRunsAU become the highest trending hashtag in the country.

The event was the first highlight of the ongoing Nike She Runs campaign to bring the women of Australia together to share their passion for running and sport.
