Charles Barkley, Carl Lewis and Perri Shakes-Drayton showcase a cutting-edge, lightweight performance innovations.
Nike’s summer of innovation event, held in the heart of London, saw legendary athletes Charles Barkley and Carl Lewis join Perri Shakes-Drayton, 400 metres hurdler specialist, to showcase a series of cutting-edge, lightweight performance innovations designed for the track, the basketball court, the pitch and beyond this summer.
Multiple products were on show, including Federation kits, Nike FlyKnit technology, Nike + Basketball, Nike + Training app, Medal Stand, Lunar technology and Nike ‘GS’ football boots.
Track & Field Federation kits:
The Nike Pro TurboSpeed collection is Nike’s swiftest and most sustainable kit to date - AeroSwift technology has improved aerodynamics and minimised distraction. It is up to 0.023 seconds faster over 100m than Nike’s previous track uniform.
KEY FEATURE: The design reduces aerodynamic drag and is inspired by a golf-ball’s dimples, which make the ball go father, faster.
Nike Flyknit technology:
Nike Flyknit revolutionizes running by rethinking shoe construction from the ground up informed by athlete insights and employing a new proprietary technology. Yarns and fabric variations are precisely engineered only where they are needed for a featherweight, formfitting and virtually seamless upper. With all the structure and support knitted in, the Nike Flyknit Racer’s upper and tongue weigh just 34 grams (1.2 ounces). The whole shoe weighs a mere 160g (5.6 ounces) for a size 9, 19% lighter than the Nike Zoom Streak 3, a shoe worn by first, second and third place athletes in the men’s marathon at the 2011 World Championships.
Nike Flyknit upper is also engineered for precision fit, creating a feeling of a second skin. Nike has created an everyday running shoe, the Nike Flyknit Trainer+, which at 220 grams or 7.7 ounces, will bring the weight and benefits of Nike Flyknit to runners of all levels.
At the heart of this latest innovation for Basketball is the Nike+ Sport Sensor, a technology built into each basketball shoe that collects information about the users’ movement and then wirelessly transmits the data to a Nike+ Basketball app on their smart phone.
KEY FEATURE: The Nike+ Basketball app breaks down the users’ game to deliver information on how high, how hard and how quick they play each game.
It also features 'Showcase' mode that allows players to record a dunk and superimpose their live data onto the video, which can then be shared with their friends via social media.
Nike+ Training app:
The Nike+ Sport Sensor, a technology built into the shoe, collects information about the user's movement and then wirelessly transmits the data to a Nike+ Training app on their phone.
The Nike+ Training app features insights and training packs from some of the world’s top athletes including LeBron James, Rafa Nadal, Manny Pacquiao, Allyson Felix and Hope Solo, making elite level training available to everyone.
KEY FEATURE: During each drill or challenge data and feedback on the workout is delivered to the user’s phone via the Nike+ Training app.
Nike 21st Century Windrunner- modelled after a sportswear staple, the Windrunner is detailed with 50 perforations across the lower back.
KEY FEATURE: a hyper reflective shell that burns bright under the most subtle lights
KEY FEATURE: Lunarlite foam combines the essentials for a perfect running shoe: cushioning, stability and lightweight performance.
Nike GS football boots:
Nike has unveiled a new football boot to be worn this summer that is the lightest, fastest production boot Nike has ever made, and the most environmentally friendly boot available.
Every component of the Nike GS has been optimized to reduce weight and waste, creating Nike’s lightest football boot ever at 160 grams for a size 9.
KEY FEATURE: A bio-based traction plate made primarily from castor beans ensures strength and flexibility on pitch alongside a sock liner made from 100% castor beans. The bootlaces, lining and tongue are made from a minimum of 70% recycled materials.
